Shilajit vs AEON. What is the difference?

We have been blogging about fulvic and humic acids and shilajit for a while now. We have covered the differences in passing in some of our posts. We thought we would take this opportunity to delve into this topic.

Shilajit (pronounced "shee-lah-jeet") and AEON both have fulvic and humic acid components in common. And they both have the reported therapeutic benefits of fulvic and humic acids. But that is where the similarities end.

Shilajit

Simply put, shilajit is a raw material that comes in the form of thick tar-like substance that in extracted from special geological deposits. The most well known deposits are located in the Himalayas which are located in India and Nepal.

Shilajit is thick and viscous and sold in the form of balls or rocks. This makes its hard to accurately dose. Also due to Shilajit seasonal harvesting, the nutrient content varies widely. This is similar to wine and "terroir", which is how a particular region's climate, soils and aspect (terrain) affect the taste of each vintage.

This tar-like substance formed in a similar way to petroleum tar deposits from which we extract fuels like gasoline. Both petroleum tar and shilajit form from the decomposition of plant matter which have then been subjected millions of years of geological processes.

Unlike petroleum tar which is highly toxic, shilajit has been shown over the millennia to have special nutritional, medicinal and therapeutic properties. Although they have similar origins, the final results are dramatically different.

Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have for hundreds of years, revered it's seemingly magical properties. These properties have recently caught the interest of nutritional, neurological, and pharmacological scientists who intuitively believe that there is something to its "magic".

It seems to do so much that some researchers are calling it a "panacea" of healthful effects

Shilajit is chock full of nutrients and most importantly – fulvic and humic acids. Fulvic and humic acids – as we have covered in a number of blog posts – are the result of natural decomposition of plant matter and how shilajit works.

Shilajit does have some challenges. It has been previously banned in Canada due to it's heavy metal content and other potential toxins such as mycotoxins. It has also been known to have a smell and taste that is that is undesirable.

Fulvic and humic acids are the secret behind shilajit and why it works. They are complex organic acids that have chemical mechanisms that science is continuing to discover.

Simply put, fulvic and humic acids work in concert. Fulvic acid works to convert important inorganic trace minerals into organic substances that are readily absorbed by your body and humic acids aid in detoxification through a chemical process called "chelation".

Think about this as minerals and nutrients being absorbed and transported by fulvic acid and toxins removed by humic acid compounds.

You can think of fulvic and humic acids as "transporters" of these various minerals. And conversely, fulvic and humic acids convert more toxic heavy metals (and as it turns out, toxic plastics like BPA) into a chelated substances which can then get flushed by your body.

These are just two examples of reactive effects behind how fulvic and humic acids work. (Other chemical reactions are being studied now but are far less understood).

The primary mechanisms for the other beneficial effects of fulvic and humic acids are:

  • to eliminate free radicals through its powerful antioxidant activity
  • to help iron deficiency and anemia
  • to improve digestion and gut health
  • to balance your immune system
  • to provide anti-aging effects
  • to aid in detoxification
  • to improve your skin, hair and nails
  • to mitigate cognitive decline by eliminating neural plaque
  • ....and others.

You can read back through our blog to find out more of the other benefits.

AEON

AEON is a purified extract of fulvic and humic acids. We don't extract it from the shilajit tar from a foreign source, however. We extract it from a rich organic deposit in northern Alberta, Canada. This particular deposit is known to be astonishingly high in fulvic and humic acid concentration, exceptionally pure and low in potential toxins and heavy metals.

We then use a patented process to purify it and to remove substances like mycotoxins that are present in all forms of shilajit. Mycotoxins are the result of the mold and fungi that aided in that initial decomposition of source plant matter.

Even magic panacea like shilajit has a bad side. AEON does not contain such mycotoxins and heavy metals. It is a purified source of the active compounds fulvic and humic acids.

It also far more soluble, better tasting and easier to accurately dose than shilajit. It naturally has zero tatse in its raw form. Simply add it to some water and drink.

The Future

An ever increasing number of scientific researchers are attempting to determine what makes fulvic and humic acids so effective in all its various different therapeutic ways. There is a race to find out what makes it truly work. We mentioned chelation earlier, but scientists think there may be other reactions at play. We are an evidence-based company so as we learn more about fulvic acid from the flurry of research happening now, we will certainly let you know.
