GMOs are new compared to human evolution, so no one really knows the long-term impact they’ll have to the human body. Not all are bad, but some are dangerous.

According to the Institute for Responsible Technology, some GMOs can cause a gluten sensitivity. Numerous nutrition and health experts say that the recent increase of gluten sensitivities cannot be chalked up to genetics alone. They believe in a possible environmental trigger for it.

Most GMO crops are engineered to tolerate a weed killer called glyphosate, aka Roundup. Even though these crops are resistant, there is still a large amount of glyphosate in them when they are harvested. Glyphosate is an antibiotic and can cause imbalances of gut bacteria which is common for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity.

Another pesticide that many crops are engineered to resist is Bt toxin. Bt toxin punctures holes in the cell walls of insects, and it does the same thing to human cells. This is a big factor in the development of leaky gut syndrome. A much larger issue with Bt toxin is that it has been shown to damage blood cells and increase the chances of leukemia.

Animals fed GMO-based food have been shown to have stomach inflammation, enlarged uteri, and higher rates of cancer.

There is a lot of activism around the world about reducing and ceasing the use of GMOs in foods. All around the world, activists are calling for the abolition of GMO use in our food supply. Many places worldwide have stopped using GMOs for health and safety reasons, but only time will tell how severe the issues they cause can be.
